Favorite Scenes in Film; 5.

Its not too surprising, perhaps, that even current movies that I count among my favorites most often take place during my favorite time period, the 1940s and
50s.

Mona Lisa Smile (2004) is about four young women attending Wellesley College circa 1954 and they are on the high road that leads to success...as proper wives and mothers, that is. Julia Roberts portrays the bohemian art history teacher who is fresh out of LIBERAL California. This independent woman decends upon this conservative Massachusetts college town preaching an open minded, all encompassing approach to education and the alumni here fights against her 'subversive' ways tooth and nail.

However, though they prevailed at first, the attitudes of the stuffy high society brass and the hold which they once held on their offspring, give way to acceptance of new ideas and a realization that as young women just coming into their own, they do not need to depend on a husband for support or a sense of worth.

Here, in one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite films, Katharine strikes back with avengeance after a previous defeat against the young women in her class and their 'holier than thou' attitudes toward her, what they percieve as, inferior, education:

A Piano; Flaming, Falling.

Jeff Desom , a German filmmaker, has collaborated with experimental pianist, Hauschka to create this short music video which showcases the lovely talent that Jeff posesses when it comes to his craft and the wonderful musical pieces created by Hauschuka.

Done using vintage postcards of NYC found in Paris flea markets and photographs provided by the Library of Congress:

Bratislava Hot Serenaders

These are The Bratislava Hot Serenaders . As what one would consider a modern Jazz Band, they aim to recreate 20s and 30s popular music verbatim with no modern day rearrangements in the music and the same can be said for their vocalists.

You will find different video clips of these superb performers on their site (linked above) but, here are my two favorites, thus far:

Hey, its ART!

I adore burlesque. Bulesque today is primarily defined as a more artistic form of the striptease and is mingled with vintage pinup elements. The performances revolve around one specific theme. At times, fire breathing acts, comedy routines, and other forms of satire are included although, primarily, today's form focuses on the beautiful ladies and the physical feats that their pronounced flexibility allows them to perform.

All of that to say that this video of a show that was done in Medulin, Croatia that is sexy but still classy but, if underwear and pasties offend you, skip it:


I would kill to go to a performance myself. Just the right bit of the sleaze factor without being classified as smut.

I'm one that usually doesn't go for the dry humor of British television but, this segment from a 90s comedy program; Harry Enfield and Chums , off the BBC is great.

I don't know how but for the past few days I've been bombarded with incredible works of art! I happened across one Emilie Faif via Crustation . I always visit the artist's site in search of anything that I, personally, may view as extraordinary and with Emilie, the Hollywood Kiss installation took my breath away.

Sweetiepie.

Sweetiepie Restaurant opens in New York City next month & with inspiration for the place being extracted from American classic film and their wondorous sets, the opportunity for you and yours to dine in a giant bird cage, and with the food being inspired by 'restaurants of the past, many of them in California [ed: Julie grew up in LA]. The Fountain Coffee Shop in the Beverly Hills Hotel is one of them. Shwabbs, Walters Coffee Shop, etc."; if I resided in New York City, I would be at the door on opening day!

Here's an interview with Mark & Julie Janklow, the proprietors of Sweetiepie, from The CoolHunter. Another thing, Mark's uncle Warner was the famous retauranteer behind Tavern on the Green and The Russian Tea Room! Vanity Fair recently put together a portfolio showcasing all of the most recent young actresses who are "on the cusp of fame or have just hit it big; they have names you need to know and faces you won’t have trouble remembering. Jen Khoshbin.

Jen Khoshbin is an artist who's work is created by the use of books a sculptural pieces.

I like all four projects, which are listed on her site but, my favorite has to be book project 4 :


In this series of familiar, often iconic images, I combine photographs with intricately carved text.
This combination creates a series of conceptual pieces that address memory and nostalgia - Asking: what have I missed or misunderstood.
